Designated Reach: December 2, 1980. The main stem from the south side of Steese Highway in T7N, R10E, Fairbanks meridian, downstream to the south side of Steese Highway in T19N, R16E.

From its headwaters north of the Steese National Conservation Area, this river flows swiftly through upland plateaus, forested valleys, and rolling hills where river travelers often see moose, caribou, arctic grayling, and a variety of birds. Because it is accessible by road and close to Fairbanks, this is one of Alaska's more popular float rivers. There are short stretches of rapids to challenge paddling enthusiasts.
