Classification/Mileage: Wild — 9.4 miles; Scenic — 6.4 miles; Total — 15.8 miles.

This segment of the river is the headwaters for the Buffalo National River and flows through the Upper Buffalo Wilderness on the north slopes of the Boston Mountains. The river is a foraging area for gray and Indiana bats that inhabit the numerous caves in the vicinity of the river corridor.
