Alabama has approximately 77,242 miles of river, of which 61.4 miles of one river are designated as wild & scenic—less than 1/10th of 1% of the state’s river miles. Alabama’s rivers have more types of plants and animals living in them than any other state in the nation, like the Cahaba lilies above. However, it also has one of the highest extinction rates in North America, many of which are species that live in rivers.
